A welcoming atmosphere greeted the breeders and followers of the Beltex Society for their Annual Show & Sale at Lanark, where trade peaked at 2,500gns. A flurry of bidding saw strong demand for the best on offer and with plenty internet bidding via MartEye trade remained buoyant.

Topping the day’s trade at 2,500gns was Gordy’s Hola Hoop from Gordon Harrsion, Park Road, Carnwath with today’s Reserve Champion. A daughter of the renowned 30,000gns Buckles Dawn Dark, out of the 5,000gns Lurg Ella. She heads to the Scottish Borders with the judge, Grant Maxwell to join his Faughhhill flock carrying a pair to Kingledores Braveheart.

Gordon also took the second top of 2,100gns for his pen leader, Gordy’s Haagen-Dazs. Same way bred as his top price, she also sells carrying a pair to Kingledores Braveheart. She sold locally to Andrew & Euan Lawrie for their Grangehall flock.

The day’s Champion came from the Baillie family at Carstairs Mains in the form of Callarag Heidi, who realised 2,000gns. A daughter of homebred Callacrag Godzilla, out of Callacrag Caprice, she is due a single to Tullylagen Jaguar. Backing his decision, she also heads home with judge Grant Maxwell for his Faughhill flock.

Other leading prices:

900gns – Callacrag Hope and Glory (twins) to W McMillan, Carse flock

800gns – Callacrag Highlight (single) to J Maxwell & Sons, Maxxs flock

700gns (twice) – Gordy’s Hubba Bubba (single) to J & R Mitchell, Fowler flock and Gordy’s Hot Tottie (twins) to N Gill & K Kennedy, Nikay flock

520gns – Callacrag Head Start (single) to M & G Ballantyne, Roadend flock

Society Sale Averages:

33 Gimmers (46 forward) averaged £653.23

A feature of the sale was the Production Sale of the renowned Heatheryhall flock (on behalf of Messrs T & A Taylor) who were celebrating 25-years of breeding Pedigree Beltex. They offered for sale their complete gimmer crop of 32 Pedigree Gimmers and 20 Crossbred Gimmers, 6 Pedigree and Selected Ewe Lambs, 7 Guaranteed Pregnancies and 6 Lots of Semen.

Topping the sale was their opening lot and show gimmer this season – Heatheryhall Helena  who realised 5,000gns selling north to fellow breeders, Alan Millar of the Lurg flock. For his money he receives a daughter of the famous 30,000gns Buckles Dark Dawn and out of one of his own bred, Lurg Ella. She sells carrying twins to the 20,000gns Curwen Hill Golden Boy.

Closely following this was Heatheryhall Heidi at 4,600gns. A daughter of Woodies Storm and out of a Buckles Dark Dawn daughter, Heatheryhall Felicity. She changed hands carrying twins to the 42k Todhall Hercules and sold to Stuart Wood for his Woodies Flock.

Heatheryhall Hazel 4,000gns carrying twins to Curwen Hill Golden Boy, realised a and find a new home with Messrs Wainwright, Todhall.

Heatheryhall Halle then received a final bid of 3,400gns from Messrs N A Wattie, Mains of Tonley, Alford, who also went to Heatheryhall Honeysuckle for 3,000gns. Mark’s first pick (Halle) is a Buckles Dark Dawn daughter and out of Heatheryhall Diamond, a daughter of Quarrymount William Wallace. She is expecting twins to Todhall Hercules. His second buy (Honeysuckle) is also due twins to Hercules but this time Mark gets a cross between Ardstewart Fred Flintstone and Wilodge Foxglove who was purchased at the Hackney dispersal.

Topping the Pedigree Ewe Lambs at 2,000gns was Heatheryhall Jelly Bean who now heads to C & C Cormack, Dunrod flock, Jedburgh. A daughter of Woodies Hulk, she is out of Heatheryhall Fiona, a daughter of Buckles Dark Dawn.

1,500gns was realised twince, firstly for Heatheryhall Jacuzzi, a Curwen Hill Golden Boy daughter and out of Heatheryhall Diamond, she also heads to C & C Cormack, Dunrod flock. Next up was Heatheryhall Jordanna who heads to Melrose with Grant Maxwell, Faughhill flock. For his money he receives a Wannop’s Godfather daughter, out of Heatheryhall Goldie, another by Buckles Dark Dawn.

Embryo Pregnancies seemed popular with the online and phone bidders. The top of these sold to 1,500gns via a phone bid to C & C Cormack, Dunrod flock, Jedburgh. For their exchange, they receive a Single Embryo sired by Todhall Hercules and out of Heatheryhall Fiona, the dam of Heatheryhall Hadley.

Something a little bit different and exclusive to this Production Sale was the selection of Crossbred Gimmers – all sired by Buckles Dark Dawn and AI’d to Curwen Hill Golden Boy. The crossbred rams from Heatheryhall have repeatedly topped the Crossbred Ring at Kelso for the last three years. Top price here in the gimmers was 1,700gns for a Beltex x Texel and sold carrying twins to Stuart Robson.

Next top at 1,100gns and carrying twins sold to local crossbred tup breeders, Messrs JW Gibb, Toftcombs, Biggar.

This was closely followed by 1,000gns, also scanned twins selling, to Mr EJC Dean, Kirkhouse, Brampton, who made numerous other purchases.
